The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has launched a preliminary report on Remand Action Plan after a weeklong case review at the Nairobi Remand Prison.
The report launched by Secretary Public Prosecutions, Mrs Dorcas Oduor at Crown Plaza, shows 58% of remandees at the Nairobi Remand Prison are aged below 30 years.
The preliminary further showed that 86% of remandees have been granted bail/bond but majority would not afford the same.
According to the report, 84% of remandees had no legal representation while the youngest remandee was 15 years and oldest 86 years respectively.
The SPP said that ODPP will strive to give priority to cases with substantial evidence and in which it is in the public interest to prosecute.
The ODPP launched a case review exercise on January 22, 2018 that seeks to help decongest the prions across the country.
